Scottish firefighters attack cuts as rescue numbers rise

Chris McGlone, of FBU Scotland, said: “The Government needs to properly fund their vital role responding to flooding, hazardous chemical spillages, road traffic collisions, lift rescues and other hazardous incidents.

“Firefighters are rescuing more people year on year and, while we welcome recent funding which has enabled increase recruitment, jobs have still been cut by 15 percent since 2012/13.”

Spending watchdog Audit Scotland says the service faces a £400million maintenance and upgrade backlog, with fears fire stations could close and fire engines could break down.
