The vote on Iran’s embargo is expected to fail, and UN Security Council members have already signalled their opposition to renewing it.
But even if the vote fails, Mr Pompeo has suggested the US will invoke a “snapback” mechanism restoring all UN sanctions on Iran.
The mechanism was envisioned in the 2015 nuclear deal in the event Iran was proved to be in violation of the accord, under which it received billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.
Mr Pompeo added: “One way or another we will ensure that the arms embargo will be extended.
“We’re not going to let the arms embargo expire on October 18.”
