Paul Robinson has backed Chelsea to pip Liverpool to a top-four Premier League finish this season, with the battle for the coveted Champions League spots finely poised.

Robinson, the former England No. 1, thinks his former club Tottenham Hotspur will miss out, along with high-flying West Ham and expects Leicester to join the two Manchester clubs in the top tier of European football next season.

With seven games to go, there are only four points between third-place Leicester and and sixth-place Liverpool – with Spurs three points further behind – and the top-four race looks set to go down to the wire.

But Robinson thinks Chelsea – who have qualified for the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and Champions League – suspects they have the ‘momentum’ to edge out defending English champions Liverpool.

‘I wouldn’t have been worrying about Chelsea until the West Brom game,’ Robinson told Racing Post. ‘The way the manager has come in, the way they’ve swept teams aside, they’ve kept clean sheets, scored goals.

‘They’ve looked a completely different team under Tuchel until the West Brom game, which took me and everyone by surprise – they looked defensively frail.

Thomas Tuchel, Manager of Chelsea talks to the media following the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg match between Chelsea FC and FC Porto at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on April 13, 2021 in Seville, Spain. Sporting stadiums around Spain remain under strict restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic as Government social distancing laws prohibit fans inside venues resulting in games being played behind closed doors.

‘West Brom found a way of playing against them: they pressed high, they took the ball back and they made Chelsea look a different oufit.

‘They’ve bounced back very well since then and I think [West Ham] is a false position. They do deserve it, they’ve had a great season. But you look at Chelsea, Liverpool behind them, Everton behind them possibly, Tottenham possibly.

‘I don’t think West Ham will have the ability to stay there, I think it will be Chelsea or Liverpool. I’d probably err on the side of Chelsea the way they’re going at the moment.

‘Momentum brings results. They’ve got a real opportunity to go to the Champions League final and a winning habit is as hard to get out of as a losing habit.’

On his former side Spurs, Robinson added: ‘I’d like not to [discount Spurs] because as I’ve said before, I’ve been a big Jose [Mourinho] advocate, I’m a really big fan of his.

‘I’ve liked him through this career, I just hoped when Spurs got him they got the Jose of Chelsea not the one at Manchester United and he just seems disgruntled again.

‘The players don’t seem to be at the level he wants them to be. The centre-halves change every week, the squad changes every week… there seems to be no continuity in his selection.

‘Harry Winks and Dele Alli seem to be out of it again, Gareth Bale – start of the season I was really excited to see him back – but that’s not going to work well.’
