Former England captain Michael Vaughan has tipped Mumbai Indians or Sunrisers Hyderabad to win the 2021 Indian Premier League.
Mumbai are going for a third successive title, having beaten Delhi Capitals in the 2020 final around five months ago.
Since India batsman Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy in 2013, Mumbai have won the IPL fives times. They are generally considered the best T20 side in history and Vaughan says they are favourites to lift the title yet again this season.
However, if Mumbai Indians slip up, the former England batsman thinks Sunrisers Hyderabad are well-placed to pounce.
Hyderabad have won the Indian Premier League once since entering the tournament in 2013 and finished third last season under England’s World Cup winning coach Trevor Bayliss and Australia star David Warner.
Brad Hogg, the former Australia spinner, also rates Mumbai as the clear favourites to win the tournament and says he ‘cannot see a weakness’ in the team.
‘Mumbai Indians have a great leader in Rohit Sharma,’ the ex-IPL star said on his YouTube channel. ‘He’s probably one of the best T20 captains going around right now. He’s cool, calm and collected.
‘They also recruit well and have a well-balanced squad, it’s probably the best squad in the IPL this year. They’ve got every base covered, there’s no hole there, I can’t find a weakness in this team.
‘For me, they have a great core group, a great culture that holds this unit together. I can’t see any cracks in this Mumbai Indians team. I think they’re favourites and will win the title.’
The 2021 IPL runs from April 9 to May 30 and kicks off on Friday with defending champions Mumbai Indians facing Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore.
