England captain Harry Kane says team-mate Harry Maguire played ‘on one leg’ in the final stages of the Three Lions’ draw against Germany.
Maguire took to Instagram after the match to apologise for his mistake and it follows calls for the defender to be dropped from the England starting XI before the World Cup.
Erik ten Hag dropped Maguire after United lost their first two fixtures of the season and United have won four on the bounce since the Dutchman’s decision.
Part of Southgate’s decision to pick Maguire was down to the fact that he’s been out of favour at Old Trafford.
But the decision proved costly as Maguire made a mistake for Germany’s opener and then sustained a hamstring injury.
Kane, though, has defended his team-mate and says the defender played on ‘one leg’ in the final stages because of his injury.
‘Any individual mistake, you’re going to be gutted. But we are a team, we will get behind each other,’ Kane said.
‘They will learn from it and they’ll move on. They have been great for us every time they put the shirt on.
‘H [Maguire] had a pretty decent injury there at the end, where he played another five, 10 minutes, on almost one leg.
‘Great character from him, I’m really proud of him for that.’
