Man Utd signing a better centre-back will unleash Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, reckons Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes believes that Manchester United signing a more dominant centre-back would not only improve their defence, but unlock the attacking potential of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in midfield.

There has been calls from Manchester United fans and former players for the club to sign a new centre-back for some time now, despite them spending a world record fee on Harry Maguire in 2019.

The likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe have all played alongside Maguire and Scholes does not think any are good enough, or specifically dominant enough for the side to improve.

An improved partner for Maguire would be a boost for the back four, but also allow Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to pick just one of Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic, freeing up Pogba and Fernandes going forward.

‘We did speak before the game about possibly bringing a centre-back in who’s more dominant than what they have now,’ Scholes told BT Sport.

‘I think that will allow them to play just the one holding midfield player, whether it’s one of them who played today, whether it’s Scott McTominay, or they bring another dominant midfield player in who can play next to Pogba.

‘Okay, you might not play that all the time, when you’re playing Manchester City, for example, but I think Man United need that attacking, flowing play and I think Pogba in the centre of the pitch will bring that alongside Bruno Fernandes.”

Scholes also commented on the future of Edinson Cavani at Old Trafford, which appears to be up in the air at the moment with the Uruguayan out of contract at the end of the season and apparently keen to return to South America.

‘I think that’s probably what he is waiting for, to see if United sign a centre forward,’ said Scholes. ‘He doesn’t look the type of player who would be happy sat on the bench and being a mentor for the young players.

‘He wants to be involved and play games. It’s an interesting decision for him and I think he is just waiting to see if United sign a centre forward. If they do, I’m going away [if I’m Cavani], I want to play every week.’
