The five-time Ballon d’Or winner requested to leave Old Trafford last month and remains keen to call time on his return to the Red Devils just one year after re-joining from Juventus.
Ronaldo is believed to want to join a club in the Champions League, while he sat out United’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to ‘family reasons’.
Before Sunday’s defeat to Brighton, he had only taken part in around 10 days’ training and was lacking both match sharpness and a familiarity with new boss Erik ten Hag’s style and tactics.
As a result he only made the bench but he was brought on shortly after half-time as United looked to get back into the match – though they still went on to lose 2-1.
According to The Sun, Ronaldo still remains desperate to leave United – with the defeat, and his role as a sub, reinforcing his feelings – and his mood is starting to bring down the rest of the squad.
Some players are said to be ‘annoyed’ with Ronaldo’s eagerness to secure a transfer as well as his mood and attitude around the training ground.
The situation is threatening to become toxic and has overshadowed United’s start to the new campaign, with some players believing the club’s board should just let him leave.
While Ronaldo has not alienated everyone in the squad and still has a few allies, many are ‘fed up with how he is going about things’.
The 37-year-old and his representatives are adamant they had a gentleman’s agreement that he would be allowed to leave this summer if United did not qualify for the Champions League.
There had been suggestions that no Champions League-level clubs had shown interest in Ronaldo, but his agent, Jorge Mendes, has told United’s board that he has an offer on the table from an unnamed club.
He has asked CEO Richard Arnold to name a price for the Portuguese superstar, but United’s hierarchy remain adamant that he is not for sale.
The club do not feel they can afford to lose their top scorer from last season – particularly given their lack of options up top, with Christian Eriksen used as a false nine against Brighton – and that has led to resentment on Ronaldo’s part.
