Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville insists he would like to see Paul Pogba revert to the left flank again, despite the Frenchman’s impressive performance in a 1-0 win against Burnley in central midfield.

Pogba scored the only goal of the game 20 minutes from time at Turf Moor to ensure United have a three-point lead at the top of the table before Sunday’s trip to champions Liverpool.

Pogba has mainly been used from left midfield in recent weeks, though Solskjaer has dropped the Frenchman back into a midfield two for games against Sheffield United and Burnley to utilise his aerial strength.

Solskjaer tends to play Scott McTominay and Fred in a midfield two against United’s top-six rivals and it’s likely the pair will be selected to face Liverpool on Sunday after being rested against Burnley.

That means Solskjaer faces a dilemma whether to drop Pogba or fit him in elsewhere in his starting XI.

However, Neville believes that Pogba’s best position is left midfield and he’s urged the Norwegian to select the Frenchman.

‘I really think Pogba’s far better when he plays off that left-hand side forward position because it frees him up,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘It makes him more like a maverick, he can go and do his little one-on-ones, his little tricks. I think when he plays deeper, he sometimes stands still and plays and tries to look for the killer pass too early.

‘Sometimes it comes off, but sometimes he gets too deep.’

Pogba is playing some of the best football of his Manchester United career and it comes just six weeks after his agent, Mino Raiola, claimed the Frenchman was unhappy at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has been heavily criticised since his £89m arrival from Juventus in 2016 and it’s arguable the midfielder has failed to live up to his price tag.

However, Neville says the midfielder is showing his best form now and that his influence on the side is growing.

‘I’ve been critical of Paul Pogba at times in the last few years because I felt like he’s nowhere near his standard, but he’s been the best player on the pitch in this second-half for United,’ said Neville.

‘Quite often, Bruno Fernandes gets the plaudits, but his aerial play has been fantastic for Manchester United in these last few weeks, winning headers in the centre of midfield and he gets forward after it.

‘It’s such a true strike – he gets a little bit of help with the deflection – but take nothing away from him. His influence in the second-half has been big.’
