Erik ten Hag set about rebuilding United’s midfield options in the summer and while the club failed to get a deal for Frenkie de Jong over the line, Eriksen has had an instant impact in the middle of the park.

Casemiro was also brought in from Real Madrid in a £70million deal.

While the Brazil international is yet to start a Premier League game with ten Hag giving him time to acclimatise to a new league, Scholes has already been impressed with how he uses the ball to get United up the pitch in a quicker and more incisive fashion.

‘I don’t remember which game it was but [United] were beaten and I was a little bit hard on Scott and Fred but they had their backs to goal all the time,’ Scholes told Gary Neville on The Overlap.

‘When they are receiving the ball with their back to goal all the time it is the only way they can go. A midfielder should always receive the ball on the half turn so they can still see their defenders and their forward.

‘You saw Casemiro did it two weeks ago and Eriksen does it all the time.

‘Small things like that just annoy me because I think if you are playing at Manchester United you should be capable of doing that. You should expect that.’

Scholes also singled out Eriksen for special praise, describing him as ‘brilliant’.

‘The perfect example of a player who plays with intelligence and plays with his brain. He’s just a clever player,’ Scholes said.

‘He knows where he is on the pitch and he knows where other people are on the pitch.’

Eriksen has been almost ever-present in ten Hag’s Premier League starting XI this season, playing the full 90 in all but two of United’s six games – coming off after 87 and 86 minutes in the other two.

Casemiro meanwhile has just 41 minutes of Premier League football under his belt, with his only start coming in the Europa League defeat to Real Sociedad.
