Hawaii volcano eruption update LIVE: Lava EXPLODES from huge cracks

12.51pm update: Five buildings destroyed – and more are expected to be damaged

The full extent of the damage isn’t yet known, but officials did say at least five structures were destroyed a number of roads have been covered in lava or severely cracked.

“Everything is still elevated,” said Talmadge Magno, administrator of Hawaii County Civil Defense. “It kind of gets you nervous.”

12.33pm update: Leilani Estates has been faced with another eruption

Shane Turpin, a resident of Leilani Estates, posted a video to Facebook early Saturday morning showing what is believed to be the eighth large fissure, surrounded by flames.

“It’s moving fast, I watched it go about two poles, this thing is 100 yards long … it’s going,” Turpin said.

“This is a very fast moving-situation,” Mayor Kim said. “This is unfortunately not the end.”

12.23pm update: Latest warning USGS – Hawaii remains on code orange

The USGS latest warning read: “The intermittent eruption of lava in the Leilani Estates subdivision in the lower East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano continues.

“Fissure 7 stopped erupting in mid-afternoon. A new fissure erupted this evening near fissures 2 and 7, and lava fountains reached as high as about 70 m (230 ft).

“Early this morning, new ground cracks were reported on Highway 130, but no heat or escaping steam was subsequently observed.

“Seismicity and deformation are consistent with continued accumulation of magma within the rift zone.”

Residents are advised to remain informed and heed Hawaii County Civil Defense closures, warnings, and messages.

12.21pm update: Evacuated residents told they won’t be going home for some time

On Friday, Big Island Mayor Harry Kim said he hoped to allow residents the chance to briefly return. 

But on Saturday, officials said the danger was too high and the earliest residents could go back would be Sunday.
