Mars: What will humans eat on Mars? Will humans be able to eat meat on the Red Planet?

Researchers believe many popular plants could also appear on the Red Planet.

These could be grown with hydroponics and even in Martian soil fertilised to replicate the growing conditions on Earth.

All plants would have to be grown indoors in order for the light and atmosphere to be strictly controlled, meaning farming will favour plants that require little water, a small footprint, and produce a high yield.

Products unlikely to appear in space colonies’ menus include organic produce, all-natural products and – surprisingly – almond milk, which requires a significant amount of water.
