The material, which is said to be a mixture of 21 polymers and copolymers, forming a paint-like liquid, was of huge interest to both the British military and NASA, it has been revealed.

Former spokesman for the space agency, Rudi Narangor, publicly backed the capabilities of Starlite back in the 1990s.

He said: “We have done a lot of evaluation and we know all the tremendous possibilities that this material has.”

When struck with heat, Starlite chars and instantly produces a carbon foam that pushes forward toward the heat source.
