Why does the moon eclipse the sun?

An eclipse happens when the Moon’s and the Sun’s orbits align, resulting in the lunar orb to pass in front of the star.

People on Earth will see the Moon and the Sun as the same size, so will see the Moon block out the Sun completely.

NASA explained: “Getting a chance to see a total solar eclipse is rare. The moon’s shadow on Earth isn’t very big, so only a small portion of places on Earth will see it.

“You have to be on the sunny side of the planet when it happens. You also have to be in the path of the moon’s shadow.”

This story will keep being updated before the lunar eclipse takes place on Sunday.
