West Indies vs. England 2nd Test
  • When: 31 January to 4 February 2019
  • Where: Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua
  • Daily start time: 2pm GMT
  • TV channel: live on Sky Sports Cricket
  • Radio coverage: talkSPORT 2

After their 381-run thrashing in the first Test against the West Indies England will head to Antigua looking to bounce back in the three-match series.

Joe Root’s side were well under-par in Barbados and suffered a batting collapse in the first innings which saw them bowled out for just 77.

England opener Rory Burns says the squad must learn their lessons from the Barbados defeat and focus on levelling the series against the fired-up Windies.

He told Sky Sports: “Finishing the Test there was obviously disappointment that we hadn’t performed as well as we wanted to.

“But leaving the ground it was, ‘how do we respond, how do we come back from that?’ and almost to use it as a lesson and something to build on, placing a higher value on your wicket and transfer pressure back onto bowlers if they bowl well.

“There are a few meetings before and after [the match] where we’ll talk about these things and how we get better and how we keep improving. It’s a bit of a blip but how do we take that forward? How do we use that as a lesson and improve?”

The second Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua starts on Thursday 31 January. Play begins at 2pm (UK time).

Denly set for Test debut

Joe Denly will make his Test debut for England after it was confirmed the 32-year-old will replace Keaton Jennings. England skipper Joe Root also confirmed that Stuart Broad has replaced Adil Rashid.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his debut, Denly said: “I am extremely proud, it has been a long time coming. I have had to wait a long time for it and there have been some ups and downs along the way but I am very excited.

“I’ve had thousands of messages come in and I’m thankful for the messages and support. I found on Tuesday afternoon that I would play, I was in the gym doing some bicep curls, as you do, and Rooty came in said he wanted me to make my debut this week opening the batting.”

West Indies won the toss and decided to bowl. Captain Jason Holder said: “There’s a bit of grass cover on it so hopefully our fast bowlers can put it in the right area and get some early wickets. We’ve prepared well and we know what’s at stake.”

Root added: “We’d have bowled first as well. It’s still an opportunity to go out and make a big first innings score. You’re always looking for continuity as much as possible.”
