After months of trying to revive Opportunity, NASA officially declared both rovers’, which were of a similar size to a golf cart, missions had been completed.
And now Mars Exploration Rover project manager John Callas, of NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena, California, has explained why the droids were able to survive on the planet for so long.
He argues factors such as the Martian weather allowed the solar-powered robots to continue powering up.
Strong winds also aided their longevity, cleaning the robots to ensure they could carry on working.
