This was backed up in 2013, when a team at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, led by Victor Kvasnytsya, analysed microscopic samples from the site.
The remnants had traces of a carbon mineral called lonsdaleite, which has a crystal structure almost like a diamond.
This particular mineral is known to form when a graphite-containing structure, such as a meteor, crashes into Earth.
Dr Kvasnytsya said: “Our study of samples from Tunguska, as well as research of many other authors, reveals meteorite origin of Tunguska event.
