And the astronomical number of stars means it is as yet impossible to pick out most of the individual pinpricks of light in the photo.

Most of the stars within this elliptical galaxy are approximately 6 billion years old and some stars within Messier 29’s 6,000-odd globular clusters are even older.

There is also a supermassive black hole lies at Messier 49’s heart, which contains the mass of 500 million suns.

So there is a lot of astronomical action to take in within just one photo, even if the image is then from 56 million light-years distance.
