Tottenham must beat Ajax for a place in the Champions League final and they will have to do it without Son Heung-min for the first leg of the semi-final after the forward was booked against Manchester City.

Son scored a three-minute brace in a pulsating encounter between the two Premier League clubs on Wednesday night as Fernando Llorente’s bundled finish in the 73rd minute sent Spurs into the last four on away goals.

Raheem Sterling, who also scored a first-half double at the Etihad, was denied a last-gasp winner as Sergio Aguero was adjudged to have been offside in the lead-up to the goal.

Son picked up his third yellow card of the competition for tugging Kevin De Bruyne’s shirt just after the break meaning he will miss the home leg of Tottenham’s semi-final with Ajax.

The South Korean was unaware of the suspension until a Sky Sport reporter in Germany informed him he would be banned after the final whistle.

‘I didn’t know!’ Son replied when he was told the news.

Son joked that Tottenham would probably fare better without him in the semi-final first leg against Ajax.

‘We arrive at the semi-final but we don’t want to talk about already being in the final because Ajax are a very good team and we have to be ready,’ he told Tottenham’s official website.

‘Of course I was very sad and still sad but I’m a very positive guy and I think the players can probably do it better without me.

‘I think the players are ready and should enjoy it like always and we will have a great result.’

The last time Tottenham reached the semi-finals in Europe was back in 1961/62 and Mauricio Pochettino praised the ‘character’ of his players after a historic win.

‘It was unbelievable – the way it finished. I am so happy, so proud. My players are heroes to be here. I am so happy for them, so happy for the fans,’ Pochettino said.

‘In a moment many things happened in your head, the disappointment was massive but they changed the decision. That is why we love football.

‘Today we showed great character and great personality it was an unbelievable game.’
