The Royal Family suffered a crisis-filled week as Prince Charles’ charity came under police scrutiny while Prince Andrew was in the spotlight after reaching an out-of-court settlement with his sex abuse accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre.
The Duke of York agreed to pay an undisclosed sum reported to be as much as £12m to Giuffre, including a “substantial donation” to her charity for abuse victims. How Andrew will fund the payout has been the subject of intense speculation, with campaigners demanding to know whether the money will be coming from the public or private purse.
In a further embarrassment for the Royals, the Metropolitan Police announced a probe into Charles’ Prince’s Foundation. The investigation comes amid allegations that help was offered to secure honours and citizenship for a Saudi billionaire in exchange for a donation to the charity.
