Trump tax trial
The prosecution rested its case this week in a trial involving the Trump Organization, which is accused of evading tax payments on luxury cars and Manhattan flats given as payment in kind to senior executives. While the company – and its owner – deny the charges, the trial comes at the same time as a range of other legal difficulties for Donald Trump. After a lacklustre announcement of his campaign to win back the presidency, is the tide finally turning against him?
Russia’s culture war
Before Russian troops withdrew from the Ukrainian city of Kherson, they stripped its museum of significant artworks and artefacts, including the bones of the 18th-century military hero Prince Grigory Potemkin. In the context of so many lost lives, the fate of these cultural treasures might seem like a footnote, but to many Ukrainians this is an act of cultural warfare. In a conflict in which history and nationhood are centre-stage, the ownership of culture has taken on outsized importance.
World Cup extra time
Qatar 2022 has attracted no shortage of controversy, but mostly due to off-pitch discussion of the host nation’s track record on human rights. When it comes to the games themselves, one notable feature is how long they’ve all been lasting: England’s first match of the tournament lasted almost two hours, after 27 minutes was added as stoppage time. Fifa has said it wants referees to take a hard line on time-wasting – but is there a better solution?
