At 17:41 PM today, the Orion spacecraft landed safely at Baja, California in what was described as a “textbook re-entry”, bringing its 25 day mission to and end. NASA tweeted: “Splashdown. After traveling 1.4 million miles through space, orbiting the Moon, and collecting data that will prepare us to send astronauts on future #Artemis missions, the @NASA_Orion spacecraft is home.” The capsule made its triumphant return at a splashdown site near Guadalupe Island, in the Pacific Ocean, south of the primary landing area. The successful return of the Orion will pave the way for a crewed test flight in early 2024 — and subsequently humanity’s return to the Moon after more than 50 years. While the Artemis I mission was uncrewed for this test flight, the Orion cpasule is expected to carry astronauts on its next mission. The stream can be watched on either the NASA Live website, or via NASA’s YouTube channel. The space agency’s coverage of the launch can also be watched via the NASA app, which is available for both iOS and Android devices.
