Arsenal prospect Charles Sagoe Jr is taking a unique career path as he heads to Sweden to join Kalmar FF on a season-long loan.
The 21-year-old has been with the Gunners for 10 years, joining from Fulham at 11 years old.
The winger has made just one solitary appearance in the first team, starting in the League Cup against Brentford in September 2023.
Since then he has spent loan spells at Swansea City in the Championship and Shrewsbury Town in League One, but is still waiting to score his first senior goal.
He will hope to end that wait with Kalmar, as he joins the Swedish club for their 2026/27 season, which starts with the Svenska Cupen this month, before the Allsvenskan (Swedish top flight) begins in April and runs till November.
Speaking out on the unusual next step in his career, Sagoe Jr said: ‘It feels great to be here and I am really excited to get started, start training and get to know my new teammates.
‘I am looking forward to showing my qualities on the pitch and helping to win matches. This is a good step for me and my continued career.

‘After the conversations with the sports director and the management staff, I got a strong feeling that this was the right environment for me. Now I want to take advantage of the opportunity and help the team achieve good results in Allsvenskan.’
Kalmar’s sports director, Mats Winblad, said: ‘Great that he is finally in place!
‘Charles is a player we have followed for a long time. He is very athletic, has really good speed and likes to drive the ball at high speed and challenge his opponent.

‘Now he is stepping into training and hopefully we will see him in the game already on Saturday against IFK Norrköping.’
Sagoe Jr has spent the season so far playing for Arsenal Under-21s, but talked up the possibility of another loan move last month.
Speaking to GOAL, he said: ‘I’m obviously going to speak to people to see what the best thing is for me. I’ve had loan experiences out at Swansea and Shrewsbury and they’re learning curves, really.

‘It’s a challenging environment going outside your comfort zone when you’ve been at Arsenal for such a long time in your career.
‘Going somewhere else is always challenging to adapt to the playing style that the team might be playing. But once you hit the ground running and you start getting appearances under your name, you’re just going to build confidence.
‘It’s a really good opportunity going out on loan to men’s environments where every game matters. But [for now] I’m just going to keep my head down in training and keep working hard and applying myself.’
