Michael Vaughan says he has ‘a funny feeling’ England will beat tournament favourites India in the T20 World Cup semi-final.

England take on India in Mumbai on Thursday for a place in Sunday’s T20 World Cup final.

Brendon McCullum’s side were less than convincing in the group stages despite winning three of their four games to advance to the Super 8 stage.

England beat Sri Lanka, Pakistan and New Zealand to top Super 8 Group 2 and set up a huge semi-final with co-hosts India.

India won all four of their group games before a heavy defeat to South Africa left their Super 8 hopes hanging by a thread.

But Gautam Gambhir’s star-studded side beat Zimbabwe and West Indies in two must-win games to progress to the semi-finals.

India are not only favourites to beat England but the entire tournament but Vaughan suspects they could suffer a shock defeat in Mumbai.

‘England seem to have found a way of winning,’ Vaughan told the Test Match Special podcast. ‘The win against New Zealand, even though a dead rubber, to get over the line was a great effort.

‘England’s fielding has been absolutely exceptional. They look really alert. England’s running between the wickets has been exceptional.

‘The small percentage things you can control themselves, England seem to be doing very well. I just have a funny feeling England can get the job done in Mumbai.’

Former captain Vaughan also surprisingly claimed England ‘have a better spin attack’ than India.

Adil Rashid remains one of the best white-ball bowlers in the world and the 38-year-old has been supported superbly by Liam Dawson and Will Jacks.

‘England have a better spin attack than India,’ Vaughan added. ‘[Varun] Chakravarthy has been got at. Dawson, Rashid and Will Jacks have been the best trio in the tournament in terms of spin.’

England have reached the semi-finals despite opener and former captain Jos Buttler returning five single-figure scored in a row.

Discussing Buttler’s struggles, Vaughan said: ‘You always look at your technique when you are not feeling as good as you have done.

‘Jos is a hand-eye player. Just stare right in the middle of the ball and react to the deliveries. The shots he hasn’t been playing are the ramp shots.

‘I think this pitch will suit that shot and to play that shot you have to stare at the ball right onto the bat. When he is playing well he gets those shots out early.’

Impressive South Africa face New Zealand in the first T20 World Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

England and India are both bidding to win their third T20 World Cup title while South Africa and New Zealand go for their maiden trophy.
