The experts recommend implementing the following changes to cultivate a healthy sleep environment – even if it’s not pitch black.

- Turn off harsh overhead lights one to two hours before bed
- Place night lights close to the floor
- Use bulbs that are dimmer and emit warmer light with longer wavelengths, like orange, amber or red
- Discontinue all screen use (computers and phones) at least one hour before bedtime to eliminate brain stimulation
- Layer window treatments to soften any harsher, bright lights coming in from the street
- Consider using a face mask to further prevent light pollution from affecting sleep quality
