The Premier League leaders had a bid accepted by their London rivals earlier on deadline day and the Italy midfielder has now penned a one-and-a-half-year deal.

Arsenal were keen to bolster their midfield this month and turned attention to the 31-year-old having been rebuffed by Brighton in their attempts to sign Moises Caicedo.

Mikel Arteta’s need for reinforcements was exacerbated by the injury sustained by Mohamed Elneny which is set to rule the Egypt international out for the rest of the season.

Chelsea, for their part, are willing to let the player go as they pursue their own interest in Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez.

Arsenal sporting director Edu said: ‘Jorginho is an established professional with a strong mentality who brings quality and experience into our squad.

‘He is a player who fits our style of play, and he joins us at a very good moment where he can contribute in a key position to help maintain our momentum. We welcome Jorginho to Arsenal.’

Jorginho will wear the number 20 shirt and will immediately join up with his new teammates ahead of Saturday’s match at Everton.

Chelsea, meanwhile, said: ‘A friendly and funny guy off the pitch, Jorginho leaves Chelsea with 213 appearances to his name and four winners’ medals, none more precious than the 2021 Champions League success in which he played a major part.

‘Good luck in the future, Jorgi!’
