England cricket selectors have named a 16-man Test squad and 15-man one-day squad for the tour of the West Indies in 2019.
Starting in January, the Caribbean tour will see England take on the Windies in three Test matches, five one-day internationals (ODI) and three Twenty20 (T20) games.
Joe Root’s Test squad is unchanged from the one that beat Sri Lanka 3-0 in the recent series. Joe Denly retains his place as Ollie Pope is left out.
England’s one-day squad, skippered by Eoin Morgan, sees Tom Curran and David Willey included but Sam Curran, Liam Dawson and Olly Stone miss out.
The England and Wales Cricket Board says the T20 squad will be announced “in due course”.
Following the Cricket Disciplinary Commission hearing into the fight outside a Bristol nightclub last year, Ben Stokes and Alex Hales have been cleared to join the tour. Stokes is included in both squads while Hales has been named in the ODI squad.
The ECB announced in December that Ashley Giles has been appointed as the new managing director of England men’s cricket.
Giles played 54 Test matches for England and was formerly a national team selector from 2008 to 2014. He replaces Andrew Strauss who stepped down last October.
“I am delighted to be joining the ECB and shaping the future of England cricket throughout the men’s game,” said Giles, 45. “I am very grateful for the opportunity and excited about working with some talented people.”
Meanwhile, the BBC reports that the West Indies have named Richard Pybus as interim head coach. The 54-year-old will be in charge for the series against England and the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
“We’ve got a great home series against England coming up,” he said. “England are a high-quality side who will be an excellent test of the team in our home conditions.”
