Euro 2020 draw: how it works, teams, pots, start time, UK TV channel

England and Wales will find out their group opponents on Saturday 30 November when the 2020 Uefa European Championship main tournament draw is held in Bucharest, Romania. 

Euro 2020 takes place from 12 June to 12 July and will be held in 12 host cities across the continent. The opening match will be at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy, and the final will be at Wembley Stadium in London, England.  

While the main tournament draw will be held this weekend we won’t know the confirmed line-up until after the play-offs in March. 

Scotland and Northern Ireland have qualified for the play-offs and will need to progress through the play-off path semi-final and final to reach next summer’s tournament. 

Should Scotland beat Israel in the play-off semi-finals, then Norway or Serbia in the path C final, they would join England in group D at Euro 2020. 

If Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland both win their path B semi-finals – against Bosnia Herzegovina and Slovakia respectively – the Irish rivals would face each other in Belfast for a place at next summer’s championships.

What time is the Euro 2020 draw?

The main draw for Euro 2020 takes place on Saturday at ROMEXPO in Bucharest, Romania. The event will begin at 5pm (GMT). 

How to watch on TV in the UK

Saturday’s Euro 2020 draw will be shown live on BBC Two and BBC Scotland starting at 5pm (GMT). BBC’s coverage will be presented by Mark Chapman.

Who has qualified for Euro 2020? 

Wales and England are two of the 20 teams that have automatically qualified for Euro 2020. Four more nations will join them via the play-offs in March. Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will compete in the play-offs in March. 

England are one of the six top seeds along with Belgium, Italy, Germany, Spain and Ukraine.

• Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Norway, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia

Euro 2020 play-offs

Following the draw on 22 November, Scotland will host Israel in the semi-finals of the Euro 2020 play-offs at Hampden Park next March. The winners of the semi-final will then travel away to meet either Norway or Serbia. 

If Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland both win their semi-finals they would face each other in Belfast for a place at the championships. 

The play-off semi-finals take place on 26 March 2020 and the finals will be played on 31 March. 

Winners of the four finals will then join the 20 teams that have already qualified for Euro 2020.

• Path A: Iceland vs. Romania; Bulgaria vs. Hungary (winner of the Bulgaria vs. Hungary clash will be at home in the path A play-off final)  
• Path B: Bosnia Herzegovina vs. Northern Ireland; Slovakia vs. Republic of Ireland (winner of the Bosnia Herzegovina vs. Northern Ireland will be at home in the path B play-off final) 
• Path C: Scotland vs. Israel; Norway vs. Serbia (winner of Norway vs. Serbia will host the path C play-off final)  
• Path D: Georgia vs. Belarus; North Macedonia vs. Kosovo (winner of Georgia vs. Belarus will host the path D play-off final)

Euro 2020 main draw: how it works 

The top two teams from each qualifying group are through to the finals and will be joined by the four play-off path winners. The 24 teams will be split into six groups of four.

Uefa.com reports: “The host nations that qualify [or could qualify via the play-offs] will be placed automatically in the following groups to ensure they are at home in at least two group games.”

About Euro 2020: host cities and key dates 

Euro 2020 takes place from 12 June to 12 July 2020 and games will be held in 12 host cities: London, Glasgow, Dublin, Rome, Baku, St Petersburg, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Bilbao, Munich and Budapest. 

The opening match will be played at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy, on 12 June and Wembley Stadium in London hosts England’s three group D fixtures, one round of 16 tie, both semi-finals and the final. 

Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, will each host three group matches and one last-16 fixture. 

The Euro 2020 final will be held at Wembley on 12 July.
