Jadon Sancho would benefit from Manchester United signing a better right-back who could help unlock the winger’s potential, believes club legend Paul Scholes.
Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis
Sancho moved to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for around £73m but has largely struggled to live up to the huge expectations that came with him.
The England winger spent time away from the rest of the first team squad this season, with Erik ten Hag saying he was not physically or mentally in the right state to play.
However, he has back in the first team now, playing regularly and scored twice last month in the Premier League.
Scholes still wants to see a lot more from the 22-year-old and thinks he could do with a more attacking right-back behind him, with an upgrade on Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka possibly the answer.
Asked if Sancho has done enough this season, Scholes told BT Sport: ‘Not yet I don’t think, I still think there’s a lot more to come from him.
‘He obviously had his issues and problems that the manager dealt with, he came back and scored a couple of goals.
‘I still think there’s a player in there, he just needs the right players around him.
‘Remember at Dortmund before, he had a flying right-back going on all the time, which really helped him because he’s not a quick player, he’s more of a skilful player who wants to play football, he wants to play with his centre-forward and right-back.
‘If United can possibly find a better right-back it might make him a different proposition.’
Sancho came on in the Europa League win over Real Betis on Thursday night, replacing the in-form Marcus Rashford on the hour mark.
There is now plenty of competition for places in United’s front three, with Rashford a certain starter and Wout Weghorst seemingly guaranteed to start most games.
The likes of Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri are all, when fit, competition for Sancho to take the other spot in the front line.
