United took the lead through Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford doubled the hosts’ advantage early in the second half.

The Red Devils looked on course for a routine victory until Casemiro was sent off twenty minutes from time after a VAR review showed he grappled Will Hughes by the neck.

Andre Marriner was sent to the pitchside monitor to review the incident and saw fit to send Casemiro off.

However, Marriner didn’t view a second angle of the incident which appears to show Casemiro simply grappling Hughes’ shirt, before the pair laugh off the incident.

As it stands, Casemiro will miss two matches against Leeds United and a game against Leicester City if his ban stands.

But Ten Hag, who concedes Casemiro was unwise to grab Hughes, says the club may appeal the decision.

‘First of all, we have to deal with it and we will do, but it is not right,’ Ten Hag said.

‘It shouldn’t have happened. And last week, VAR doesn’t do anything about the tackle (on Christian Eriksen by Andy Carroll), but this was avoidable and because in this incident there have to be consequences and they are inconsistent and that is not right, that is not fair against us.

‘We have to think about [appealing]. But be fair, we have seen when you’re freezing (the frame), Casemiro is crossing the line. But many more players were crossing the line there.

‘We get also some warnings about our team reacting like this and I think you have to do it, you have to protect each other but we want to keep our standards and values at Man United, keep them high.

‘We can’t cross lines but we have to stick together and, yes, we have to stand for each other, yes.’
