The Gunners ended the window with three significant additions to their first team squad in the form of Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and experienced Italy international midfielder Jorginho who arrived on deadline day.

Ultimately, Arteta was furnished with reinforcements in the three areas of his squad that he had identified as concerns but Arsenal were forced to show a level of flexibility in the market they had not anticipated.

The Gunners were left frustrated after missing out on Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea after they failed to agree a fee with Shakhtar Donetsk, while they switched attentions to Jorginho after Brighton refused to countenance the sale of Moises Caicedo.

Back in the summer, the Gunners lost out to Manchester United having been in the running to recruit Lisandro Martinez, while Douglas Luiz remained at Aston Villa having been the subject of two deadline day bids.

Asked ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game at Everton what needed to change in order for Arsenal to land their priority targets in future, Arteta claimed it was only natural for a club of Arsenal’s financial limitations to be in a position where they would consistently need to adapt.

He said: ‘I’m really happy with what we’ve done. For what you plan and what you can actually do in this industry, normally that doesn’t happen, so you have to mould and adapt.

‘We’ve done that and the most important thing is the profile of the person, and the quality that we bring in makes us better, and I’ve no doubt that we have done that.’

The signing of Jorginho, meanwhile, was of particular importance to Arteta given the season ending injury sustained by Mohamed Elneny.

He said: ‘We knew that in this market, you have to adapt and you have to be flexible. You have to be ready for inconvenience.

‘We had one with the latest news on Mo’s injury and we needed a player in that position.

‘He’s a player I’ve always admired. He’s a great character and he’s someone who is going to bring leadership and quality in that position. He’s going to help the team a lot.’
