Quiz of The Week: 13 – 19 August

Figures published this week revealed that UK households are experiencing the worst economic crunch across the G7 countries.

Britain’s consumer price inflation hit 10.1% in the year to July, an increase that “exceeded economists’ expectations” and “highlights the difficult task” that the Bank of England will now face in attempting to tackle the crisis, said the Financial Times

Keir Starmer has revealed Labour’s plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis. The £29bn proposal would see household energy bills frozen for six months from October and would be funded by extending the windfall tax on oil and gas companies.

The Times reported that three-quarters of Tory voters supported Starmer’s plan, with polling revealing a “public appetite for more radical measures”.

Meanwhile, Tory leadership hopefuls Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss travelled to Scotland and Belfast for hustings events, where they were quizzed on the thorny issues of whether they would allow a second Scottish referendum on independence and the Northern Ireland protocol.

The National reported that the pair “refused to say” whether either would allow a repeat of the 2014 independence vote, while Belfast Live said there were “mixed views” among audience members following the event.
