This week saw Ukrainians marking the war-torn nation’s Independence Day exactly six months after Vladimir Putin launched Russia’s full-scale invasion. 

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy banned large-scale celebrations in the capital as US intelligence warned that Moscow was planning fresh attacks on civilian infrastructure and government facilities.

Boris Johnson marked the landmark date, on Wednesday, by announcing a further £54m support package for Ukraine. In his final visit to Kyiv before quitting No. 10, the outgoing prime minister “urged the international community to ‘stay the course’ in its support” for the embattled nation, said The Guardian.

Back in the UK, the cost-of-living crisis continued to dominate headlines. Market regulator Ofgem announced that the energy price cap will increase to £3,549 per year for dual fuel for an average household from 1 October. British companies are also facing a “cost of doing business” crisis that could force many into liquidation, ministers and lobbyists are warning.
