The stand-off on Ukraine’s border dominated the thoughts of Western officials this week, with Emmanuel Macron flying out to Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin.
The French president had boasted of having a “historic solution” to the tensions between the Kremlin and the government in Kiev. But five hours of talks produced little progress, prompting Russia to begin military drills near Ukraine’s border.
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was also dispatched to Moscow for talks with her Russian counterpart. However, the meeting was marked by a series of gaffes by Truss, prompting criticism from Moscow’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov.
Fears are mounting that Russia is already in the midst of a “dress rehearsal” for an invasion of Ukraine. But public opinion seems firmly on the side of defending Kiev from any further aggression.
