“This will hurt,” says Metro as it leads on news that the UK is facing its longest recession in almost 100 years. The Financial Times forecasts that interest rates are unlikely to rise much further, with the Bank of England saying that the recession is expected to bring inflation back down to the Bank’s 2% target.

Meanwhile, says The Telegraph, chancellor Jeremy Hunt is planning to raise capital gains tax on businesses in a bid to plug the government’s £50bn fiscal black hole. Hunt accused Liz Truss of having had her head “stuck in the sand” over the scale of the crisis, says the i paper.

The Guardian reports on the verdict of a judge who says a man who bled to death after the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017 was “failed at every stage” by emergency services.  The parents of eight-year-old Saffie-Rose Roussos, who was also killed, tell The Mirror they believe their daughter could have survived if the emergency response hadn’t been so lacking.
