Energy crisis lifeline: Brand new system can avoid blackout risk and slash £1bn from bills

This also comes as households are forking out around double what they were last year on average to pay for their energy bills due to the surging wholesale costs of gas and electricity. This has pushed many into fuel poverty, and while the energy price guarantee is capping bills for typical households at £2,500, this is set to rise to £3,000 in April.

But thanks to CLASS, households may be able to swerve some of the damage, with the potential to collectively save a staggering £1billion.

Paul Bircham, Electricity North West’s engagement and regulatory strategy director, said: “In an incredibly difficult time for all customers, we’re delighted to see a forward thinking move by the energy regulator Ofgem in making a decision that enables a national rollout for CLASS.

“The system really is one-of-its-kind and it will benefit all electricity customers and if rolled out nationally, Ofgem have estimated CLASS could save customers in excess of £1billion. We do understand it’s a worrying time for all billpayers and we’re committed to doing everything we can to help ensure annual bills are kept as low as possible.”
