NASA asteroid WARNING: Asteroids a ‘MAJOR threat’ to humanity too tough to DESTROY

Charles El Mir, the study’s lead author, said: “We used to believe that the larger the object, the more easily it would break, because bigger objects are more likely to have flaws.

“Our findings, however, show that asteroids are stronger than we used to think and require more energy to be completely shattered.”

While researchers understand asteroids at fist-sized scale, it has been difficult to translate this understanding to city-size “planet-killer” asteroids.

In the early 2000s, a research team simulated what would happen if a one km-wide asteroid hit a 25km space rock at 11,000mph.
