Despite this, NASA says it will keep the Artemis 1 mission’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft on the launch pad so long as the sotrm does not get more powerful than expected.
NASA said in a statement on Monday: “Based on current forecast data, managers have determined the Space Launch System rocket and Orion will remain at Launch Pad 39B.
“Teams at Kennedy will continue to monitor the weather, make sure all personnel are safe, and will evaluate the status of the Monday…launch attempt for the Artemis 1 mission as we proceed and receive updated predictions about the weather.”
The Artemis mission scheduled for next week marks a huge landmark as NASA is poised to return to the Moon for the first time in 50 years.
The 321-foot-tall SLS rocket will be launched for the first time ever, taking an uncrewed Orion capsule on a 25-day mission around the Moon and back. It is hoped that a nearly identical crewed mission will follow in 2024.
