Surgeons kept a man alive with no lungs for 48 hours – here’s how

The patient was admitted to Northwestern Medicine, Chicago, in early 2023 following a cardiac arrest. He had developed Influenza B, which subsequently progressed into bacterial pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). His lungs had reached a state of liquefaction due to a treatment-resistant infection, which in turn induced multi-organ failure through sepsis. Conventional life support proved ineffective, as the necrotising lung tissue remained a primary source of systemic infection.
