How many earthquakes hit Yellowstone each year?

The USGS estimates Yellowstone averages about 1,500 to 2,000 earthquakes per year.

Data accrued over the last decade (2010–2019) by University of Utah Seismograph Stations located 17,243 earthquakes in the Yellowstone region.

This provides an average daily number of earthquakes of 4.7, or one earthquake every 5.1 hours.

Approximately half of these events occur in swarms, meaning they not evenly distributed over time.

As a comparison, over the last decade seismograph stations located 14,080 earthquakes in the Utah region for an average of approximately 3.9 earthquakes per day, or one every 6.2 hours.
