England won the first one-day international (ODI) against the West Indies on 20 February after completing a record run chase at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The Windies batted first in Bridgetown and set an imposing target of 360-8 from their 50 overs. Opening batsman Chris Gayle impressed with 135 and his knock included 12 sixes and three fours.

In response Jason Roy (123) and Joe Root (102) both hit centuries and England won the match by six wickets with eight balls to spare. The 364 score was the fourth-highest run chase in ODI history, the BBC reports.

Speaking after the victory England captain Eoin Morgan said: “We thought 361 was definitely chaseable. We said at the halfway stage that it was game on.

“Jason [Roy] and Jonny [Bairstow] were brilliant and Jason got us way ahead of the game with that magnificent hundred.

“We don’t take Joe Root for granted at all. We’re extremely lucky to have him and to win in the fashion we did, he played a big part.”

West Indies skipper Jason Holder said: “With a side like England, if you put them down, they’re going to make you pay for them.

“We’re a little disappointed with the way we went about it in the second innings. The bowlers tried, we created chances but we just didn’t hold them in the field.”

The second ODI between the West Indies and England will take place on Friday 22 February at the Kensington Oval in Barbados (3pm GMT start).

England name T20 squad

England have named a 14-man squad for the three-match Twenty20 international series against the West Indies.

Wicketkeeper Sam Billings and batsman Dawid Malan are recalled to the squad for the first time since last year’s tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed that all-rounder Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler will be rested and will return home after the fifth ODI on 2 March. Surrey batsman Jason Roy will also miss the T20 series to return home for the birth of his first child after the final ODI.

The first T20 takes place on 5 March at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium in St Lucia (8pm GMT). The second and third T20s are on 8 and 10 March.
