And the asteroid which smashed into Earth 66 million years ago contained an abundance of iridium.
The rare metal has the ability to penetrate the nucleus of a cancer cell by latching onto a blood protein known as albumin.
Iridium was attached to albumin using a special coating which then glowed brightly, according to the study.
Once iridium is inside the nucleus, scientists have discovered they can blast the nucleus with a fibre optic laser, which causes the cell to produce poisonous oxygen which kills any cancerous cells, while remaining harmless to the healthy ones.
